A Small Bionic Sensor Chamber Designed for Hand-Held Electronic Nose

Sensor chamber plays an important role in an electronic nose (e-nose) system, and it might affect the readings of sensors and the cleaning time of e-nose system. Inspired by the turbinate bone and the distribution of airflow in the biological nasal structure, a small bionic chamber was designed for hand-held e-nose systems. Different baffles were added in the design of sensor chambers to mimic the turbinate bone in the biological nasal cavity. Nine different chambers were designed with various height and shape of baffles. We simulated the fluid characteristics of gas transmission in different chambers and analyzed the distribution of gas pressure and velocity around the gas sensors. Simulation results showed that the proposed bionic sensor chambers outperformed the normal ones. The pressure in the sensor chamber is proportional to the height of the baffle, and the velocity of airflow is inversely proportional to the height of the baffle.
