A Compact MICS Band Operated Implantable Antenna for Biomedical Applications

This paper presents a compact meandered patch based implantable antenna operating in Medical Implant Communications Service (MICS) band which is between 402-405 MHz. The proposed antenna is fed by a coaxial cable and has a compact volume of 0.16 cm

including the superstare layer. The antenna is inserted into muscle tissue of a three-layered block phantom representing the human chest. Simulations are carried out using High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software. The performances of the antenna are analyzed inside human chest phantom model as well as compared with different lossy substrate materials. The antenna resonates at 405 MHz with a reflection coefficient of -34.32 dB and a wide 10-dB impedance bandwidth of 195 MHz. Furthermore, the simulated gain is found as -27.48 dBi at 405 MHz. The proposed antenna is characterized by very small size as well as good performance inside three-layered tissue model.
