Fractional order IMC controller via order reduction and CRONE principle for Load frequency control

In this paper, a novel approach is proposed for the design of reduced order model based fractional order (FO) controller using Internal model control (IMC) scheme for Load frequency control (LFC) of a single area power system. The proposed technique incorporates the concept of CRONE principle to tune two parameters of a fractional order low pass filter based on gain crossover frequency and phase margin requirements. The resulting FO controller is a cascade of the conventional proportional integral derivative (PID) controller and fractional order low pass filter. The efficacy of the proposed technique is corroborated via the comparison of time response plots and performance indices with the existing techniques in literature. Simulation results reveal that FO-IMC controller exhibits an improved disturbance rejection capability, better transient response and excellent robustness in the presence of parametric uncertainty.
