Temperature Calculation of an Induction Motor in the Starting Process

Transient temperature rise has a great effect on the safe operation of electric motor including superconducting motor and other medium and large induction motor. In this paper, we aim to study the effect of the transient starting process on the temperature distribution and temperature rise of an electric motor. Taking a high-power-density and high-voltage induction motor, for example, a 3-D fluid-solid coupling transient model is built based on the actual physical structure of the induction motor. The transient temperature distribution in the starting process is then obtained according to the proposed coupling model. The transient temperature rises are analyzed when the induction motor starts with different loads. Experimental results show that the proposed method for the transient temperature rise in the electric motor is effective. This work provides an important theoretical foundation for the evaluation of transient temperature rise in the superconducting motor, medium and large induction motor, etc.
