Business Process Architecture-driven Change Management Applied to a Cancer Care Organization in a Systems of Systems Context

Cancer Care systems have increasingly evolved into Systems-of-Systems (SoS) arrangements. However, these emerging arrangements bring about increased levels of complexity; mainly due to the different characteristics of the constituent systems and their nature of participation in the respective Cancer Care SoS arrangement. Consequently, achieving effective traceability of changes related implications, maintaining a high-level of Business-IT Alignment (BIA), and achieving effective coordination and communications processes are considered key challenges when applying change management in a large-scale context such as the Cancer Care SoS context. To address these challenges in such a context, novel frameworks are needed. This paper introduces the development of a key constituent of such a framework, namely a ‘Business Process Architecture (BPA)-driven Linkages and Interactions component’ based on adopting a Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) approach. This component integrates between BPA-driven change management elements and BPA-driven SoS context elements in order to guide the application of the change management processes in the cancer care SoS context. The integration also focuses on achieving a high-level of Business-IT alignment, holistic forward and backward traceability of change related candidate implications, and facilitating the coordination and communication processes while applying change management in SoS context. A case study has been conducted at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) to demonstrate, evaluate, and further mature the developed component.
