Measurement of Electromagnetic Shielding Provided by New Generation Train Windshields

This paper deals with the measurement campaigns that have been carried out on new generation trains in order to assess the electromagnetic shielding provided by the train control cab (driver compartment) windows. Indeed, recent train control cabs are equipped with new generation window panes for both side windows and windshields. Such new generation windows exhibit higher levels of electromagnetic shielding than older ones; leading to higher radio signals attenuations. Experimental data has been collected to characterize rolling stock cabs electromagnetic behavior. Measurement results show an attenuation of the electromagnetic field with the modern window panes and a dependency on incident wave polarization in particular cases. A precise evaluation of this attenuation is necessary to improve window panes requirements for wireless communication purposes.
