Robust Sliding Mode Speed Control of Vehicle Engine System

This paper presents a speed control mechanism for vehicle engine speed using non-linear and linear controllers. Proportional, Integral and Derivative (PID) controller and Proportional Integral (PI) controller are used for linear response analysis while Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) for the non-linear analysis. Furthermore, SMC based PID controller is modeled and then used to control the engine speed. A step speed is used as input reference signal and the results of proposed controller are compared with PI, PID and SMC controllers. Simulation results show that SMC based PID controller performs efficiently and smoothly tracks the input reference with good robustness and stability.
