Design and Integration of Antennas for Launching RF Signals in Metallic Tubular Structures

In this paper, we report on finite element modeling of three types of antennas for launching the dominant waveguide mode into a cylindrical pipe. We show that a patch antenna on the inner surface located at any position can successfully launch the TE 11 mode into the pipes. The other two antenna types considered, a quarter wave probe and an inductive loop antenna, are not practical in this application.
