Design of a Wideband Reconfigurable Huygens Metasurface

Huygens metasurfaces allow electromagnetic waves to be arbitrarily manipulated by implementing the required electric and magnetic boundary conditions along a surface. Reconfigurable Huygens metasurfaces offer an additional advantage of real-time tunable responses. This paper presents the design of a unit cell comprising a wideband reconfigurable Huygens metasurface, whose elements correspond to the geometry of the electric and magnetic dipoles. The design is aided by making use of an equivalent circuit model that allows the response of the cell to be accurately predicted as it is tuned. Simulation results show that the designed unit cell can achieve phase range of over 180° and insertion loss of less than 3 dB over a 40% bandwidth.
