Loss and Efficiency Analysis of Universal Motor Used in Mixer Grinder by Mathematical Modelling

The universal motor works on both AC and DC supply and it is used in home appliances like fans, mixer grinder, refrigerator etc. It has been characterized to have higher power output with the smaller size and starting torque to be high at a lower speed and can carry high loads. In this paper, a mathematical model of the universal motor for a mixer grinder is proposed and developed using MATLAB/Simulink. The losses are obtained for both AC & DC fed universal motor. The motor is analysed in terms of its efficiency and torque characteristics at varied speeds. It has been observed that the efficiency and torque with respect to varied speed shows an improvement in DC in comparison with AC fed motor. In the 230V AC universal motor with speed of 18000 RPM, efficiency will be around 52.16% and remain will be the losses i.e. 47.84%. In the 220V DC universal motor, efficiency will be around 54.5% and remain will be the losses i.e. 45.5%. The efficiency of the DC operating condition is more than the efficiency of the AC operating condition of the universal motor.
