Green Energy Distribution in Southwestern Haiti

To create a green energy educated population in the Southwestern Peninsula of Haiti, a team from the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) partnered with L'Institut Technique de la Cote-Sud (ITCS) in Coteaux, Haiti. Through the partnership and funding from the IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) the CU Boulder team guided the design and installation of a photovoltaic (PV) system to provide for daily educational needs while simultaneously serving as a living laboratory for hands-on teaching at the ITCS. The students and teachers at the green energy institute had the opportunity to install the entire system and learn about two different battery chemistries, Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LPF) and Lead Acid. Discussed in the paper will be the reasoning behind the approach presented, the objectives and motivation, the trips to Haiti, the PV system, the results, future plans, and the sustainable growth of the ITCS.
