A Low-Profile Antenna Design for LTE/WWAN Smartphone Application

A low-profile antenna for smartphone application is proposed in this study. The antenna is mainly constructed of a combination of loop and monopole to achieve dual wideband (698-960 MHz, and 1710-2690 MHz) which can cover LTE 700/900 (698-797, 890-960 MHz), GSM850 (824-894 MHz), LTE1800 (1710-1880 MHz), PCS 1900 (18501990 MHz), UMTS 2100 (1920-2170 MHz), LTE 2300/2600 (2305-2400, 2500-2690 MHz) operations. For compactness consideration, the antenna is designed into 3-dimensional structure to reduce the area of occupancy. It was fabricated on a 0.8-mm thick FR4 substrate with a size of 120 × 60 mm

as the system circuit board. The overall volume of the antenna is only 7 × 60 × 3 mm
³
with a 7 × 60 mm
²
ground clearance. It shows a low-profile characteristic and suits for modern smartphone application. Detailed design considerations and experimental results of the proposed antenna are presented and discussed.
