Novel Toroidal Winding for Efficiency Improvement of a Line-Start Induction Motor

Over the years with increase in energy demand, efficiency of electric motors is a major concern since they contribute to majority of this demand. Many of these motors are in the low-power range (<;7.5 hp)and usually induction motors are widely being used in this power range for industrial, household, irrigation water pumping, etc. These motors are inefficient and it is difficult to achieve the new international efficiency (IE)standards using the conventional design approach. In this paper, a new toroidal winding is proposed for efficiency improvement of a 5 hp squirrel-cage induction motor (SCIM). A transient 3-D finite element (FE)analysis is carried-out for ascertaining the claims of efficiency improvement and the results are presented.
