A CIM-Based Methodology for External Model Update of Real-time System Models

With EMS widely commissioned among transmission utilities, the maintenance of the real-time operational model becomes essential in ensuring system reliability. For many utilities, real-time operational models consist of the internal parts, which represent their own service territories, and the external parts, which describe the interconnected external grid. Since it is too cumbersome to maintain the external part of the operation model on a regular basis, utilities depends on the information from the neighboring companies and/or regional transmission organizations (RTOs) to update the external model. In order to promote information sharing among entities and standardize the routine for external model update, this paper proposes a CIM based methodology which enables convenient inter-corporate model exchanging and customization to fit for individual specifications. The proposed methodology is adopted by American Electric Power (AEP) to update its operational model and validate it with EMS applications. The implementation of the proposed methodology promotes the use of the CIM standard among utilities.
