Analysis of Faults and Protection Schemes for Magnetically Controlled Shunt Reactor

In this paper, we investigated the MCSR simulation model installed on EHV bus from a protection point of view. Different types of faults are identified that may occur on the electromagnetic part of MSCR, based upon its locations. The faults are applied to a simulation model while closely monitoring the behavior of fault current, voltage, and their sequence components at different points. Due to the unique structural design of MCSR, separate protection schemes are adopted for each winding. In view of the damage of turn-to-turn fault and limited electrical protection schemes for its detection, special attention is given for such types of faults inside power and control windings, and an algorithm is proposed to identify the faulted winding in case of a turn-to-turn fault.
