Device-Free Crowd Count Estimation Using Passive UHF RFID Technology

Two algorithms using spatial and waveform characteristics are proposed to predict the number of people crossing an existing RFID installation. We show that with some minor additions to the existing systems and using the proposed algorithm, it is possible to estimate the number of people crossing the designated path with reasonably good accuracy. It also does not require tagging of people who are being counted. The proposed idea is tested in the laboratory for continuously moving crowd up to 75 persons, and the count estimation with 90% accuracy has been obtained.
