Electronegativity Measurements and Analysis for CO2 and CO in DC Plasma Discharge

Electronegativity of CO
₂
and CO in dc plasma discharge was investigated employing the Allan-Boyd-Reynolds (ABR), the current balance (CB), the orbital motion limited (OML), and the floating potential (FP) methods by taking advantage of the positive ion number density using the recorded I-V curves. Electron energy distribution functions were evaluated, and electron number density and temperature were obtained. Electron temperature and number density were also obtained for both gases, employing the exponentially rising electron current. Results obtained for positive and negative ions were found to be compatible for ABR, CB, and OML for each gas with the FP method to be more than one order of magnitude higher for both gases. Electronegativity of the CO
₂
and CO was deduced using the measured data for electron and negative ion number densities, with the FP method at about one order of magnitude higher than those for the remaining methods.
