Probe-fed Rectangular Flat-wire Open Loop Antennas

Although both round and rectangular wires can be used to construct loop antennas, the rectangular wires, especially the ones with high aspect ratios, are much more efficient than the round ones with the same physical cross-sectional area. In this work, a probe-fed rectangular flat-wire open loop antenna is investigated. Simulations on different antenna parameters is conducted. The simulation results demonstrate that the sensitivity of the resonant frequency to different parameters varies, and two of the most sensitive parameters are the loop width and the air gap between the loop and the ground. These two parameters are also capable of modifying the miniaturization capability of such antennas. Interestingly, increasing the loop width can miniaturize the antenna without degrading the antenna performance. Instead, it can increase the efficiency and the gain of the antenna. This study was finally verified by good agreement between the simulation and measurement results of a fabricated antenna.
