Accurate scattering matrix reconstruction for multi-element antennas — application to hybrid arrays

The design of multi-element antennas, including especially phased arrays and parasitic element arrays, requires synthesis methods to determine the weights to be addressed on each radiating element in order to satisfy a set of specifications on the radiated pattern. To be reliable and realistic, this synthesis must be accurate to take into account the coupling parameters between the radiating elements. To avoid the prohibitive CPU time linked to full-wave approaches, a formalism derived from periodic boundaries is proposed. The main novelty is to get the full scattering matrix in a general case, contrary to classical formalism where only the active reflection coefficient is determined. This approach is then integrated into a synthesis approach and applied to the synthesis of an original array. This one allows the optimization of the effective area of the panel with only a few number of active channels.
