Thermal modeling of the near-field exposure from wireless 5G devices

For the assessment of the compliance of 5
^th
generation of wireless communication devices with exposure limits, the RF induced heating is evaluated in a layered and a homogeneous model of body tissue for different generic transmitters operating at 28 GHz and 100 GHz. The temperature increase is quantified in terms of the spatially averaged E-field and the power density transmitted in free space. The results show that E-field and power density are equivalent for the configurations investigated when averaging over an area of 1cm
²
. Relevant parameters for exposure assessment and temperature increase are the size of the averaging area and the layering structure of the tissue. For the considered configurations, the results indicate that the impact of the reactive field can be excluded.
