Analyzing the Effects of Distributed Voltage Control on Hybrid AC/DC Distribution Network

Recent technological advances in conventional power network with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER) and power electronics devices results in smart and sophisticated power network. This rapid growth in DER with AC and DC output type and large-scale integration of sensitive AC and DC loads at distribution network results in an inevitable shift to Hybrid AC/DC distribution network. The realization of Hybrid AC/DC distribution network is now possible with the employment of multi-terminal voltage source converter (VSC-MTDC) systems. In this paper, the load flow calculations for multi-terminal VSC-MTDC based hybrid AC/DC network is performed and the effects of the distributed DC voltage control technique are analyzed. Various network scenarios are analyzed by modifying IEEE 14-bus hybrid AC/DC distribution network equipped with VSC-MTDC and results are investigated according to power sharing requirements and operational efficiency using MATPOWER an open source power flow package.
