Performance of Underwater Laser Communication in Turbid Water

Absorption and scattering of light in water causes attenuation, which is related to the turbidity of water. In this paper, we analyze the performance of underwater wireless laser communication in turbid water based on a water tank experiment. A green laser with a low absorption coefficient in water was used. The transmission method uses PPM (Pulse Position Modulation) and modified PPM based on the IM/DD (Intensity Modulation/Direct Detection) method. Each modulation method provides varying performance analysis results according to the turbidity of the water.
