Numerical Simulation on Hydrodynamic and Acoustic Performance of Circular Cylinder Using Bio-Inspired Method

The hydrodynamic noise radiated from a circular cylinder can be reduced effectively by controlling the flow field. A bionic method proposed in this study is one of the flow control methods. The effects of bionic serrated structures arranged on both sides of a cylinder on hydrodynamic and hydroacoustic performance of the cylinder were numerically investigated. At the Reynolds number of 43,000, based on approach flow velocity and cylinder diameter, the simulation approach of Large Eddies Simulation (LES) were verified by compared with an experiment. The simulation results indicated that the serrated structures arranged on both sides of the cylinder have a significant influence on the hydrodynamic and hydroacoustic performance of the cylinder. The serrated structures can control the fluctuating lift force induced by unstable vortices acting on the cylinder surface. Meanwhile the hydrodynamic noise of the cylinder can be reduced by arranging serrated structures on both sides.
