Free Space Optical System Performance using Non-Kolmogrov Spectrum over Gamma-Gamma Turbulant Atmosphere

Kolmogrov's power spectrum density model has been utilized for long time to describe the atmosphere turbulence. However, this model has not been accurate many times because it has been used for wide range of wave numbers. In this paper, we will use a generalized form of Kolmogrov model to evaluate a free space optical system performance under week turbulence regime when the communication channel is characterized by Gamma-Gamma probability distribution function (PDF). The generalized Kolmogrov spectrum uses general amplitude and exponent term. Scintillation index, probability of fade, and bit-error rate (BER) were evaluated over the generalized Kolmogrov model. The numerical results led to better system performance when the exponent term equals to 3.8 or closer to 4 than the case of conventional Kolmogrov spectrum in which the exponent term equals to 3.66.
