Adaptive Traffic Light Control System Based on WSN: Algorithm Optimization and Hardware Design

Intelligent transportation systems provide a high return on investment, especially when incorporated as part of ongoing construction activities with a network of wireless nodes that have the capability to sense a parameter of interest like a magnetic field, temperature, humidity, vibration etc. This paper studies the Wireless Sensor Networking for Intelligent Transportation Systems, tailored and optimized for road networks and describes the design and implementation of a mote, which will be used in intelligent transportation system as a controller of crossroads lights to solve problems like traffic congestion, accidents, transportation delays and larger vehicle pollution emissions. After comparing the newest technologies and motes designed for this domain, we have completed a schematic design(prototype) based on MSP432 microcontroller, CC2520 RF transceiver, and HMC5883L magnetometer.
