Facing the end of life can be traumatic. Although everyone will eventually die, serious illness can serve to heighten the salience of one's morality. Patients may experience existential anxieties about the meaning of life and their legacy. The quality of patients' remaining days or months may be a significant concern as might the long-term well-being of family and friends. Death also creates significant challenges for the bereaved. In addition to coping with the loss of a loved one, the bereaved may be tasked with carrying out the deceased's final wishes.
