Conceptual Design and Characteristic Analysis of a Rotary-Type Superconducting Wireless Power Transfer System Using ReBCO Primary at 50 Hz

This paper presents the conceptual design and characteristic analysis of a rotary-type superconducting wireless power transfer (SWPT) system prior to practical device development. Structural designs of rotating pot-core transformer, copper secondary, and high temperature superconducting primary are presented. A double-pancake coil assembly wound by ReBCO tapes is used as the primary winding, and this ReBCO primary is designed to operate at 50 Hz. The relations among the transfer power, transfer efficiency, air-gap distance, primary current, and secondary load are investigated to clarify the SWPT behaviors under different operating conditions. Benefitting from high critical current and nearly zero loss of ReBCO primary and elimination of high-frequency power conversion devices, the rotary-type SWPT scheme could be well expected to combine the advantages of high power, high efficiency, and compact device structure.
