Chapter Abstract:
The “SCADA system” refers to the combination of telemetry and data acquisition. It commences with measurement of the data by specific devices in the field of application and collected via intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), then transferring this data to a master station to implement the necessary processing and control algorithms. The SCADA system consists of four components: instrumentation, remote stations, communication networks, and master terminal unit (MTU). The integration of the SCADA system and the substation automation system results in a real‐time wide‐area monitoring and control of substation by controlling, for example, the power flow, power limits calculation and substation operation. Power factor correction is implemented by inserting shunt capacitors into the system. The system of power factor correction is protected against overcurrent, overvoltage and overtemperature by using adequate relays.
