Ion Release of Stainless Steel 316L and Cobalt Chromium L605 Intravascular Bare Metal Stent: A Review

Stainless steel 316L and Cobalt chromium L605 are materials that often used in the manufacture of intravascular stents, because they have high mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. However, both of these materials have disadvantages, there is ion release that can cause negative reactions in surrounding tissues, such as allergies, inflammation, and other tissue damages. Several studies have confirmed that the concentration of discharged ions will increase as the pH decreases in body fluids, and intravascular stent design also affects. Nickel ions released from stainless steel and cobalt chromium as intravascular biomaterial may cause damage to human tissues, where the stent was placed. Other investigation and research to reduce the amount of nickel ion release is needed, to make a safer biomaterial for intravascular stents.
