Analysis of labor efficiency and determination of the factors governing labor productivity in Mumbai Metropolitan Region

As a result of the ever-increasing demand for superior structures constructed at a faster rate, the construction industry has been coming up with innovative methods to monitor and improve labor productivity. Labor productivity is a key factor that influences the progress of work. With this in view, this research is based on elaborate work-study, which focuses on the essential factors, which either increase or decrease the labor productivity. With a case study, the theoretical calculations (i.e. the amount of time required for the execution of a particular work) are compared with the actual values obtained from the site for understanding the productivity and any significant deviation from the theoretical values is thoroughly studied in order to point out the reason for the deviation. Also, a questionnaire is prepared, based on which the labor at the site are enquired about the working conditions, their expectations from the employer, schedule of work, availability of basic amenities and other such factors that help in gaining a deeper understanding of the psyche of the people involved with the actual execution of work. The methods proposed in this study are intended at providing solutions for improving the labor productivity while executing a construction project in and around the Mumbai Metropolitan region.
