Investigation of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Coatings Based on Ti-Al Intermetallic Compounds Synthesized in a Nitrogen Environment

The most effective method of increasing the operational properties of the cutting tool is the deposition of wear-resistant coatings, including vacuum-arc discharge plasma. The composite coatings based on nitrides and carbides obtained by these methods is demonstrate improved mechanical strength, high hardness and wear resistance in comparison with conventional monophasic coatings. Recently, much attention has been paid to the development and investigation of composite coatings based on the Ti / Al system. During the experiments, on samples was deposited coating based on intermetallic compounds of Ti-Al system synthesized in a nitrogen environment. Microhardness, wear resistance, coefficient of friction, adhesion strength, scratch resistance of coatings was investigated. According to the results of the research, it is established that the basic physical and mechanical properties of coating synthesized in a nitrogen environment were increased than compared to the coatings synthesized in the inert gas argon and titanium nitride.
