Wireless NoC-A Revolutionary Alternative as Interconnection Fabric

The recent System-on-Chip (SoC) technology is capable of integrating large number of processor cores on a single chip. As technology advances, the Network-on-Chip (NoC) architectures are emerging as one of the most promising and developing platform for the integration of such multiple embedded cores on a single die. It has been always a challenge of constructing an interconnection fabric for connecting cores and other components with efficient transport of data in minimal time, high volume, and least energy. The traditional bus based architectures suffer from many problems as the scaling of CMOS technology goes below 90nm. Looking at all possible solution for meeting the current requirements of low-power and high-speed with continuous scaling, the on-chip wireless interconnection network is viewed as a revolutionary method. Wireless network is capable of drawing significant performance gains with its implementation on chip as interconnection fabric. In this paper, it is attempted to accumulate a brief review of different interconnect strategies advancing in different domains but a special emphasis is given on wireless interconnects in NoCs. The details of topologies, modulation techniques and the tools used for realizing the wireless network on chip are also cited here.
