The Use of UVC-LEDs for the Disinfection of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis

This is a summary of the work done in researching the feasibility of using UVC-LEDs to disinfect airborne Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This research was necessitated by the increasing threat posed by the resurgence of TB in the sub-saharan Africa, more especially the drug resistant strains. This research dealt primarily with understanding both the electrical and radiometric properties of a UVC-LED assembly. With the increasing advances in solid state technology (SST), UVC-LEDs are well placed to replace the traditional low pressure mercury (Hg) lamps which have been used widely as a source of ultraviolet radiation for air disinfection.
