Grid Integration of Building Systems and 1 MW Photovoltaic Array using VOLTTRON

We describe the goals, facets, and progress to-date of a grid integration project that seeks to control and stabilize the electric power demand/supply to mitigate intermittency and provide ancillary services to the grid. The University of Toledo features an all-electric Campus of Energy and Innovation with a 1 MW PV array. The VOLTTRON platform developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will be used to integrate this array with a Building Automation System and 130 kWh capacity Li-ion storage. Irradiance forecasting will be used to predict PV generation, and algorithmic control of the building and storage systems will enable management of power output and VAR to present as flat a response as possible to the grid.
