The scattering parameters of boreholed antennas in the UHF band

In this work a semi-empirical model is presented to characterize the transfer function and scattering parameters of a vertical dipole boreholed in a salt mine, in the 370-430 MHz bandwidth. This is achieved by combining measurements from a vector network analyzer with a signal flow graph modelling of the antenna coupling with the environment, and the effects of radio wave propagation in layered media.
