Origin of the FEM pattern from C60 molecules adsorbed on tungsten tips

We have demonstrated that the C
₆₀
molecules adsorbed on a W tip show highly symmetric FEM patterns that are similar to that of well-defined atomic orbitals [1]. The observed image can be considered to be originated from super atomic molecular orbitals (SAMOs), which is confirmed with STM observations and theoretical calculations [2]. In this paper, we present the results of detailed analysis of field emission features from the C
₆₀
molecules including energy distributions of emitted electrons.
