Introducing of a Test Sample for IEC/TS 60034–18–42 to Assess the Durability of the Turn Insulation

To assess the suitability and condition of the turn insulation in drive-fed induction motors, various evaluating process are suggested by IEC/TS 60034–18–42. However, this technical specification is entirely general and there is no specific data for preparing of the test sample. About the length and the thickness of the copper strands used in the proposed test sample, no specification is defined. Moreover, the suggested insulation structure can be used only for evaluating of the straight part of the coils. Hence, using the introduced test sample by the IEC/TS 60034–18–42 cannot consider the effects of curve sections of the coils (e.g. overhang area) on the turn insulation condition. In this paper, dependency of the PDIV to the thickness and the length of the copper strands used in the introduced test sample by the IEC/TS 60034–18–42 are demonstrated. The effects of the filling materials on the PDIV and lifetime test of the introduced test sample are presented. Finally, a proper test sample which can consider the all practical condition of the turn insulation and evaluate the suitability of the turn insulation without dependency to the test sample specification is introduced.
