A Wide Tuning Range LC-VCO For The ISM Radio Band

A wide tuning range LC-VCO for the ISM radio band is presented in this paper. The wide tuning frequency is accomplished using a continuously tuned varactor, for the fine control of the frequency, and a five bit digitally controlled capacitor bank for the coarse frequency tuning. The proposed wide band oscillator was designed and simulated using a 180 nm commercial CMOS technology, it has a frequency span from 2.4 GHz to 5.7 GHz, resulting in a tuning range of 81.5 %, a phase noise of -85 dBc/Hz at 600 kHz from the carrier and a power consumption of 8 mW.
