Simulation-driven Design Optimization of a Multilayer EMC Input Filter

Power Electronics design in the automotive industry faces many challenges, it has to perform in a high currents environment, have a compact design, an easy fabrication and assembly process and finally be compliant with radio frequency conducted emission regulations. However, taking into account the challenges cited above, leads to a complex structure. The more complex the structure, the bigger the ElectroMagnetic Interferences (EMI), which can impair significantly the performances of the equipment.In this paper we will present an optimization of a filter's design, thus a reduction of the EMIs and an improvement of its performances through simulation with CAD software. In order to analyze the performances of the filter, a 3D model of the filter has been developed and validated by comparing simulation and measurements results. Once the model is validated it is used to study the EMI issues, the impact of parasitic elements and possible improvements.
