Series Reactive Power Compensator with Reduced Capacitance for Hybrid Transformer

This paper discusses a hybrid transformer which consists of a conventional line frequency transformer with comparatively high leakage impedance and a series reactive power compensator. Several topologies and control of series compensator are reviewed in terms of losses and harmonics. The required capacitance, which can be important design factor in the phase separated configuration, is also discussed. Experimental demonstrations with a laboratory prototype, and loss evaluations with practical scale voltage compensators designed for a 30 kVA hybrid transformer are reported.
