Reduced-Order Eddy-Current Loss Modelling of Electrical Machines Using Lookup Tables Obtained via 2D Finite-Element

The correct identification of the various loss sources in an electrical machine is an essential aspect in order to design efficient systems. As time-to-production becomes more and more important having fast and accurate models is an important factor which should not be neglected. To this aim, this paper presents a method to model eddy-current losses of electrical machines in Simulink by means of lookup-tables (LUTs) to be included in a dynamic model. The data for these tables has been acquired using a series of magnetostatic 2D finite-element (FE) simulations which can be generated using parallel computing. With the proposed methodology, one is able to predict the instantaneous eddy-current power loss under different operating conditions. The difference in terms of average value for the eddy current power losses calculated by the reduced order model (ROM) is less than 1% com pared to the FE results under the same operating conditions. It is also shown that it can be used for non sinusoidal currents such that it may be used in the development of efficient controllers.
