RTISim: A New Real-Time Isolated Simulator for Turbine-Governor System of Industrial Power Plants

An electric power system encounters with different operational dynamics on its generation units that is affected by different items such as limitations of turbine-governor response, the importance of accuracy, dynamic modeling and model validation, and system design and operational scenarios. To prevent system frequency collapse and consequent events, it is necessary to assess the operation of turbine-governor units. This paper discusses the conceptual design and operation of an isolated real-time power system simulator. This simulator that is named hereafter as real-time isolated simulator (RTISim) along with all of its related equipment, can evaluate power plant performance in order to verify the speed droop, and power turbines capabilities. RTISim replaces the real system frequency and active power feedback of the governor by a simulated frequency and active power which are produced in Lab Viewsoftware environment. In this case, the turbine-governor capability can be investigated in isolated network without being disconnected from the grid and thus, the risk of operation of islanded/autonomous system during the test, can be eliminated. Lab View, as a real-time simulation software, is used to simulate different events and record related results such as frequency deviation and active power changes. These data can help engineers to model turbine-governor of industrial power plants in power system analysis tools as precisely as possible.
