Standalone solar-wind-electrochemical energy systems for northern territories

The aim of this paper is to report on hybrid solar-wind-electrochemical energy systems developed for power supply to decentralized customers located in northern territories. Suggested technical solutions allow for autonomous operation of the power plant at cold temperatures, high level of snow cover, polar nights, and other severe conditions. It was shown that application of electrochemical energy storage and generation system (based on electric batteries and direct methanol fuel cells) allows to replace ecologically destructive diesel generator and to smooth the daily, monthly, and seasonal irregularity of energy supply from renewable energy sources.
