Oxygen evolution reaction study on platinized carbon and transition metals (Ni, Co, Mn) for electrolysis of alkaline water

Water electrolysis is a promising method for efficient production of high purity oxygen and hydrogen. Even though noble-metal oxides (PtO
₂
IrO
₂
, RuO
₂
, and RhO
₂
) are the most active materials for the oxygen evolution reaction, low-cost transition metal oxides are typically used in alkaline electrolysis due to their abundance and relatively high activity and stability. Thus, nickel, cobalt, and manganese have been extensively explored as bifunctional catalysts, capable of catalyzing both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for the conversion and storage of energy. To improve their catalytic properties, different strategies are used; either by changing the method of preparation or the doping of metal ions. In this paper, we describe the preparation of Mn

Ni
_1.5
CoO
₄
oxide by sol-gel method, and we discuss a comparison of electrocatalytic properties between NiO, Mn
_0.5
Ni
_1.5
CoO
₄
and Pt/C.
