Modelling and Simulation of Organic Photodetectors using Photonic Crystals

Finite difference time domain (FDTD) modelling to improve the Electric field intensity of an Organic Photo detector (OPD) is reported by interposing a Photonic crystal with Brillouin zone on the emissive layer. A systematic approach had been presented towards FDTD modeling of an OPD structure. The use of Photonic crystal within the OPD structure improves the field intensity emanating from an OPD thereby resulting in higher generation rate. Photonic crystals which are useful to control optical properties of material, if incorporated within OPD structure, improves the power absorption from the OPD structure. Study has been carried out to analyze the effects on electric field intensity when Photonic crystal is interposed on the emissive layer. Enhanced electric field intensity is indicative of improved light extraction efficiency from an OPD. The power absorption, Far field intensity and Short circuit parameters of OPD with and without Photonic crystals (PC) was studied for various wavelengths of light particularly from 520-560nm and found that absorption is optimum for green light wavelength.
