Design of Compact Monopole Antenna for Wireless Applications

This article presents a new compact planar CPW-fed antenna with ultra-wide bandwidth and high power gain. The patch antenna has been printed on a 20×24 mm2 Rogers RT 5880Lz substrate of with relative permittivity of 1.94 and δ of 0.0009. The proposed antenna operates over wide frequency (8.1 GHz) from 3.1 GHz till 11.2 GHz based on -10 dB reflection coefficient criteria and coving the complete bandwidth assigned by FCC for UWB systems. This monopole has omnidirectional radiation pattern so that the patch is independent of place position and high gain that reaches 5.2 dB. The compact design has been investigated, and optimized in terms of the impedance matching, bandwidth, radiation features, structure size, as well as gain. The antenna performance shows that the design is appropriate for ultra-wideband applications.
