A Study on Location Information Screening Method for Ship Application Using AIS Recorded Data

We focus on the relationship between real-time data in the automatic information system (AIS) station on each ship and between each ship. However, these types of stored recorded data can become big amounts of data. If these data are stored using traditional methods, the data analysis would take too much time. In this study, we focus on the recorded and stored AIS data in the own ship AIS station. The purpose of this study is to present a method to preprocess big data for screening. In particular, Class A AIS stations report their location information (Message ID 1/2/3) autonomously every 2-10 seconds, depending on the ship's speed and/or course changes. We concluded that position data (Message IDs), including the characteristics of the track, are obtained when the ship is steered for changing course. In this paper, we propose a method to use Message ID as the location data, including the characteristics of the track when maneuvering for course change. First, we propose a method to automatically extract the location data of other ships and ships that the ship's AIS station acquired during the voyage. In addition, we investigated these data Message IDs separately and performed a comparison. According to the evaluation results, the extracted data required less storage space and retained many characteristics of the track. It was possible to show that this screening method can be applied using fewer operational processes and without increasing time and cost.
