Influence of Reduced Inertia by Added Wind Farm on Low-Frequency Oscillatory Instability of Power Systems

The integration of additional intermittent and asynchronous generations such as wind is bringing in many challenges in dynamic operational security concerns of the modern grid. One such concern is low-frequency oscillatory instability of the power systems. The asynchronous generator based wind generation technologies may use the converter technologies as a generator/grid interface to convert varying frequency of the wind generators to the fixed frequency of the gird. As a result, this configuration will decouple them from the grid making wind generation inherently asynchronous and inertia-less. The inertia of rotating mass in conventional synchronous generation offers damping to all oscillations of any frequency. The replacement of such synchronous generators by inertia-less wind farm configuration will certainly elevate the low frequency oscillatory problem of the power systems. In this work, a study was carried out to understand how the displacement and replacement of synchronous generators and subsequent reduction in inertia can influence the oscillator instability of the power systems.
