Transient Simulation Based Model Identification of a Black Boxed LCC HVDC

This paper introduces an electromagnetic transient simulation-based system identification method to recognize the black boxed control system of a Line Commutated Converter (LCC) HVDC system. The black boxed control system mainly poses a challenge for the system study engineers when they need to include additional custom controller such as power oscillation damping (POD) controller for further studies. In the proposed method, we first take a generic model of LCC HVDC with standard controllers. An objective function for a non-linear optimization method is formulated to tune the parameters of the standard controllers so that the transient response of the generic model matches with that of the black boxed system. The optimized generic LCC HVDC model thus obtained can now be used to test a custom POD controller to assess the stability of the system.
