Improving Cyber-Aware Energy Management System Applications

The modern electric power grid is operated through a suite of control applications available in the Energy Management System (EMS). As more and more communications take place using the Internet, it is critical to consider cyber information while monitoring the grid in order to detect cyber attacks or malfunctioning communication devices. In this paper, we improve and integrate the state estimation and contingency analysis functions in the EMS decision support tools to consider the impact of cyber information by appropriately adjusting the weights for the measurements. The contingency analysis will include a number of (N - k) contingencies associated with the online and offline cyber information. The state estimation results are also used as one of the input factors for the contingency analysis. The proposed algorithms are tested on the IEEE 57-bus and 300-bus test systems. The results show that the proposed state estimation algorithm is more robust when there are inaccurate measurements due to cyber events, compared to the traditional state estimation approach. In addition, the proposed contingency analysis algorithm provides a ranked list of contingencies based on the given cyber information for the test systems.
